Testing your well water in North Carolina
Private well water can be tested by the NC State Laboratory of Public Health, through the local health department, or by a state certified commercial lab. Procedures and fees vary by county. (Source: Two ways to test)

Questions
How do I check that a well pump installer is certified in North Carolina?
The North Carolina Division of Public Health publishes the list of certified drillers and pump installers. We read it on October 7, 2026; every name in the table below comes from it, with the certification types the state gives. Ask any business for its certification number before work starts.
How many certified well pump businesses are there in North Carolina?
The North Carolina Division of Public Health list we read shows 624 businesses or licensees based in North Carolina whose certification covers well pump work, and 388 that hold a water well drilling certification or class. Firms licensed only for monitoring, geotechnical or geothermal work are left out.
Does North Carolina require private well owners to test their water?
Only once, for a new well: the local health department must test it within 30 days of issuing its certificate of completion. After that no testing is required by law, and NC DHHS recommends a bacteria test every year.
